A Prospective Study of the Occurrence of Avascular Necrosis of the Skeletal System in Post Covid 19 Infected Patients with Corticosteroid Use
Abstract
: COVID-19 can have an impact on various biological systems. Avascular necrosis (AVN) as a consequence of "long COVID-19" has not yet been documented in many studies. We predict that the widespread use of life-saving corticosteroids in COVID-19 cases will lead to an increase in AVN cases. We conducted a study documenting the occurrence of AVN in post covid 19 infected patients who had taken corticosteroids during the course of their treatment. The incidence in the current study was 6.5 %. Prednisolone was given to these patients in a mean dose of 760 mg (400–1300 mg) over the course of their treatment, which is less than the mean cumulative dose of around 2000 mg steroid mentioned in the literature for the development of AVN. The average number of days it took for symptoms to appear after the last steroid use was 178 days, or almost six months. According to a literature analysis, developing avascular necrosis on an MRI following steroid treatment in non- covid circumstances takes six to twelve months. The early onset and progression of AVN are accelerated by COVID 19 infection and corticosteroid usage.
