Abstract : Oral leukoplakia - most common potentially malignant disorder and its management is currently not evidence-based. The present study intends to determine the efficacy of freeze dried black raspberry capsules on clinical and histopathological retro gradation and also regression of COX – 2 enzyme levels in patients with oral leukoplakia. A total of 30 patients diagnosed with oral leukoplakia were randomly divided into 2 groups – group A and group B. A detailed clinical examination was done and size of the lesion was noted. For both groups punch biopsy was done and blood sample was collected before the start of treatment and after 45 days. Group A were treated with 300mg freeze dried black raspberry capsules twice daily for 45 days and group B was treated with antioxidant capsules (SM Fibro) twice daily for 45 days. To test the mean difference between the two groups, a student’s t-test (paired sample t-test & independent sample t-test) was used. Statistically, a significant difference was not found in both groups regarding the size of the lesion (P > 0.005). However, the study demonstrated a statistically significant decrease in COX-2 enzyme levels in group A than in group B (p < 0.005). Half of the patients in both the groups should one unit of improvement histologically which is not statistically significant. Based on the study outcome, it was concluded that management of oral Leukoplakia with dietary supplementation of black raspberry capsules can be considered one of the treatment modalities.
