Attitude of Physiotherapy Students towards Geriatric Population in Gujranwala, Pakistan (A Cross Sectional Survey)
Abstract
: Globally elderly population is rising these days and these similar types of trends can be observed in Asia as well as in Pakistan. Geriatrics is not recognized as well as practiced in Pakistan although it is a specialized area of training in medical. This research is carried out to recognize the place of geriatrics in Pakistan. The aim of this study was to measure the attitudes of physiotherapy students towards geriatric population. All data was collected from physiotherapy students of Institutes of Gujranwala that are offering DPT program, through questionnaire Geriatric Attitude Scale (GAS) that measured their attitudes towards old people. A sample size of 196 students was obtained. 66% students showed positive attitude, 8% showed neutral attitude and 26% showed negative attitude. Majority of participants showed positive attitude towards older people, however negative attitude was also seen in significant population. The causes of negative attitudes towards the geriatric population should be detected and further researches should be conducted for improvement.
