Current Trends in Septic Abortion & Sequelae in a Teaching Hospital of Eastern India
Abstract
: Septic abortion is still a challenging problem and a major cause of maternal mortality and morbidity in developing countries. In spite abortion has been legalized in India over three decades, unsafe abortion continues to be a significant contributor of maternal mortality and morbidity. The aim of the present study was to assess the magnitude of septic abortion in a tertiary care referral hospital and study their complications. A single centred, institution based study were carried out from January 2022 to December 2022 at the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata after obtaining ethical clearance. Among 597 women <20 to > 40 years of age with abortion were included in this study. The data was tabulated in Microsoft Excel software and analysed with SPSS V.24 software. Incidence of septic abortion was 4.86. Majority of patients were in the age group of 21-30 years 361 (60.47%). spontaneous abortion was 279 (46.73%), criminal abortion was 38 (6.37%) and MTP was 280 (46.90%). Grade I infection was 382 (63.99%), Grade II infection was 212 (35.51%). Conservative treatment given was 85 (14.24%), Surgical (D&E) was 510 (85.43%). Drainage of pus from peritoneal cavity and subtotal hysterectomy was done to 1 (0.17%%) each, ccomplications in case of septic abortion was occurred in 2 (0.34%). Endotoxic Shock for the cause of death was 2 (0.34%) and number of death was 2 (0.34%). Maximum hospital was two to three days was 550 (92.13%). Increasing awareness, making legal abortion services easily available to the masses at cheaper cost, and stringent laws to contain quackery are required to decrease the incidences of illegal and septic abortions, and related maternal morbidity and mortality.
