Title
:
Effectiveness of visual inspection and acetic acid in screening cervical cancer in Iraq, 2022
Abstract
: Cancer is a disease characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. Cervical cancer is considered nearly preventable due to slow progression, the availability of screening tests, and provision of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine. Different screening and diagnostic modalities have been used for early detection. To determine the diagnostic values of visual inspection with acetic acid for cervical cancer. A total of 85 women aged 21 – 78 years were participated. Case files were reviewed. Screening was done by PAP smear, VIA, and colposcopy. PAP smear was used as standards for identifying the diagnostic ability of VIA test and its accuracy. About 59 (69.4%) of participants showed positive VIA test and 26 (30.6%) of them showed negative VIA test findings. Parity showed a significant effect on VIA test (p = 0.05). The diagnostic values of VIA with colposcopy were 88.5%, 39%, 39%, 88.5%, and 54.1% respectively. The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and accuracy of VIA with PAP smear findings were 87%, 51.3%, 67.8%, 76.9%, and 70.6% respectively. Sensitivity and specificity of VIA test are low. Therefore, it is not suited for screening in developing countries.
