Evaluation of the Mucolytic and Expectorant characteristics of a formulated polyherbal cough syrup
Abstract
: Mucus plays an important role in respratory system as moisturizing agent and physical of the innate immune system. The treatment for the overproduction of mucus upon the occurence of allergy or infection has gained considerable attention over the years. This study aimed to determine the effect of polyherbal cough syrup with formulation of the ginger, liquorice, lemon, cloveoil, pepermint oil, cinnamon, and honey, then tested for mucolitic activity through its ability to dilute the cow intestine mucous, as well as expectorant activity test by the method of phenol red secretion in tracheal. The Hedonic test results of 3 formulas have a sweet taste, a soothing throat effect, and some what bitter taste. Among 3 formulas, 1st formula is most preferred by the panelists with a value of mean 7.5. Based on the results of mucolitic test, got cow intestine mucous viscosity values on the 1st formula 1.3 cps; 2nd formula 1.64 cps; and 3rd formula 1.44 cps, the negative control value comparis 2.9 cps; and positive control 1.38 cps. The results of the testing activity of expectorant get the value of the optical density formula from cough syrup medicine candidate made from honey, on formula 1, 2, and 3 consecutively as follows 8.73%; 12.7%; and 20,63%, with the positive control value of ambroksol 26.19% and positive control herbal cough medicine 11.91%. This particulate combination of drugs is very effective for the treatment of cough, although this syrup can also be used for the treatment of the common cold respiratory disorders.
