MALE INVOLVEMENT IN MATERNITY CARE; DETERMINANTS AND DETERRENTS
Abstract
: Male involvement in maternal care are the things which are done during the prenatal, childbirth and postpartum periods of pregnancy by the male spouse in order to support the mother. Male involvement in maternity care remains a significant challenge as most men don’t fully understand their roles in maternal care. This study helps to determine the extent of male involvement in maternity care. descriptive cross-sectional study was used in the study to evaluate spouse’s perception of their involvement during pregnancy, labour and puerperium in Ogbomosho town. Random sampling technique was used Common factors aiding the presence or otherwise of spouses in maternity care is regarded as determinant or deterrent. The major determinants of spousal support in maternity care included availabilty of funds(79.6%), privacy(62.5%), paternity leave period(67.6%), religious perspective(71.5%), nature of work(75.3%) whereas the major deterrents includes attitude of health care workers(72.4%), Nature of work(67.9%), non availability of funds(64.5%) and commuter marriage(59.3%).The age of respondents and their type of marriage had a statistic significant relationship with their spousal support in maternity care.(p=0.017;0.014) Of particular interest was the fact that the attitude of the health workers was an important and statistically significant determinant and deterrent to spousal involvement or support in maternity care respectively. (p=0.018;0.020) When respondents were asked about paternity leave, majority felt it was a positive development and that the timing and duration was appropriate. Male/Spousal support is an important part of maternity care and has been seen to greatly help improve maternal outcomes and neonatal care, as it exposes men to actually see the dangers in having poor maternal health care.
