Title
:
Potential of Red Beetroot (Beta vulgaris) Powder in Improving Oxidative Stress and Hemoglobin Level of Wistar Rats After High Intensity Exercise
Abstract
: Beetroot contains high levels of antioxidants and can trigger vasodilation of blood vessels. Beetroot has an ergogenic effect, so it is widely used to produce high energy. This study aimed to determine the effect of beetroot powder on the improvement of oxidative stress in Wistar rats received high intensity exercise. 30 Wistar rats were randomly divided into 5 groups (n=6), they were control negative (Group I); control positive (Group II); received exercise and 0.36 g/200 g b. wt/day of beetroot powder (Group III); received exercise and 0.72 g/200 g b. wt/day of beetroot powder (Group IV) and received exercise and 1.08 g/200 g b. wt/day of beetroot powder (Group V). The treatment was given 1x/day after exercise for 28 days. MDA levels were measured using ELISA while Hb levels were measured using the Sahli method by taking retroorbital vein blood. The data were analyzed using paired sample t test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). There are differences in MDA and hemoglobin levels before and after the administration of beetroot powder as much as 0.36 g/200 g b. wt/day; 0.72 g/200 g b. wt/day and 1.08 g/200 g b. wt/day in Wistar rats received high intensity exercise (p<0.005). Result of the post hoc test showed differences in MDA and Hb levels between the control and treatment groups. Beetroot powder was effective in improving oxidative stress and hemoglobin levels in Wistar rats received high intensity exercise
