Abstract : The concept of self-care among patients with hypertension was used frequently in the literature. However, the concept was used inconsistently, different concepts were used to indicate for self-care. Further, the concept of self-care lacks clarity and was used differently by authors from different disciplines. To increase the understanding of the self-care concept through identifying its surrogate/related terms, definitions, attributes, antecedents and consequences. In this paper, Rodgers' evolutionary method was used to trace the evolution of self-care concept among patients with hypertension. The following data bases were systematically searched Scopus, EBSCO, Pubmed and MEDLINE. Articles used were published in English during 1981-2018. A total of 61 articles were included. Analysis yielded nine surrogate/related terms, nine attributes, eight antecedents and three consequences. The concept of self-care among patients with hypertension was not consistent in the literature. Being consistent in addressing the concept of self- care will enhance the development of empirical and theoretical knowledge
