Abstract : Hypothyroidism affects cognition in a multitude of ways; however, verbal memory is a consistently affected domain. Verbal memory, which is a memory for verbally presented material, may be enhanced using semantic clustering. Imaging studies have shown that the hypothyroid brain has many functional and structural abnormalities in areas that are important for semantic clustering. The current study aimed at analyzing the semantic clustering among overt and subclinical hypothyroid subjects.46 hypothyroid subjects were contacted who were attending the outpatient ward of the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Sir Sundarlal Hospital, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University. 26 patients were overt hypothyroid, 20 were subclinical hypothyroid, and 20 healthy control patients were also recruited and were matched on age, education and gender. Both multivariate and univariate analyses of variance revealed a significant effect of hypothyroidism, and the hypothyroid group performed significantly inferior in comparison to the healthy controls on semantic clustering measures. It is clear from the current study's findings that hypothyroidism, whether overt or subclinical, can affect semantic clustering among young hypothyroid patients while learning new material..

Abstract : Macrophages in diabetes mellitus exhibit certain altered inflammatory and immune functions that include reduced phagocytic capability towards micro-organisms. This could lead to accumulation of excessive dysfunctional macrophages at the diabetic cutaneous wound and also predispose to many macrophage associated lesions such as necrobiosis lipoidica, xanthogranuloma, malakoplakia and rosai-dorfman disease, some of them have a progressive clinical course and could mimic malignancy. Hence, it is important to diagnose them at an earlIer stage to administer proper treatment. In this article, we have discussed macrophage dysfunctions that occur in diabetes mellitus, presented a case of diabetic abscess that exhibited florid histiocytic reaction and described histiocytic lesions that are associated with diabetes mellitus..

Abstract : Alginates are sulfated polysaccharides that existed in brown algae, possess various bioactivities and apply diversity in the fields of food, functional food, pharmaceuticals, and industry basing on their physico- chemistry characteristics. The paper focused on the impact of the growth times (January to June), the extracting temperature (70, 80, and 90oC) and time (1 to 9 hours), and Na2CO3 content (0.05 to 0.5%, compared to alginate content) on the viscosity and the average molecular weight of alginate which extracted from brown algae Sargassum polycystum grown in Southern Center, Vietnam. The results showed that the viscosity and the average molecular weight of alginate were affected by the extracting temperature and time, and Na2CO3 content (p<0.05) and changed according to the trend of the linear model. The effect of the extracting temperature on the viscosity and the average molecular weight of alginate was higher than the extracting time and Na2CO3 content. The difference in the viscosity and the average molecular weight of alginate occurred when the Na2CO3 content- to-sodium alginate ratio was larger and equal to 0.3/1 (w/w). Alginate content (33.8 mg sodium alginate/ g DW) of brown algae Sargassum polycystum was highest in May. The current study supports for the processing control of alginate preparation applicating into other fields such as food, functional food, pharmaceuticals and industry..

Abstract : Myoepithelial carcinoma is a rare salivary gland tumour which accounts for less than 1% of all salivary gland tumours. Donath et al in 1972 introduced the term epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma by noting the myoepithelial component as an integral part of the tumor. In 1991, the WHO recognized EMC as a distinct entity and subtype of salivary gland adenocarcinoma which became a part of the new classification system 1. Clinical and radiological findings often mimic a benign parotid tumor. Because of rarity of EMC, a standard treatment guideline is not yet known. Surgical resection is the most widely used approach. Local recurrence rates of 23–50 % have been reported with 25 % chance of distant metastasis. Patients with histo-pathologic markers of aggressive disease should be considered for adjuvant radiotherapy. Here we describe a case which presented in 59-year-old female as a swelling below left ear. Complete resection of the gland was done and post-operative radiotherapy was advised..

Abstract : This study was conducted in an effort to evaluate the efficacy of Desarda’s Technique versus Lichtenstein’s Tension Free Meshplasty Technique in Inguinal Hernia repair in terms of duration of surgery, post-operative pain, duration of hospital stays and resumption of daily activities, recurrence and complications. A prospective study of 100 patients were taken for the study and were divided into 2 groups of 50. Group D Patients underwent hernia repair using Desarda’s technique. Group L Patients underwent hernia repair using Lichtenstein’s Tension Free Meshplasty. The selection of patients to each group was done using lottery method. The patients are then followed on post-operative Days 1, 5 and 7 and after 1,3,6 and 12 months respectively. The duration of hospital stay in D Group was significantly lower compared to L Group (2.36±1.44 days vs. 3.88±1.56 days; p<0.05). The mean duration of surgery in D Group and L Group was 66.28±16.51 mins and 65.52±16.36 mins respectively. However, there was no significant difference between the groups (p>0.05). The mean duration of resumption of daily activities in D Group was significantly lower compared to L Group as (7.32±1.48 days vs. 11.08±2.07 days; p<0.05). It was also observed that there was no recurrence in both the groups. Desarda repair was associated with early return to basic work and activity, shorter hospital stay, hence can be used as the method of choice for most patients due to its low cost, low recurrence rate, and simplicity of repair..
